How to Root Galaxy S5!

ere’s how to root your Galaxy S5.  I have put together 2 different ways of rooting your Galaxy S5 depending on what you are going to do with your Galaxy S5.
For AT&T or Verizon Galaxy S5, please see How to Root AT&T/Verizon Galaxy S5 instead!
If you need to backup your phone, install custom ROM, and also have root, follow Root Method #1 below.
If you just need to have root and not going to backup your phone or install custom ROMs, follow Root Method #2.
Credits – I want to thank the two XDA developers Phil3759 for CWM Recovery and ChainFire for SuperSU/CF Auto Root.  Don’t forget to donate to them if you have some money to spare as this tutorial would not have been possible without the awesome open-source developers who work for free, thx! (Donate to Phil3759,Donate to ChainFire Here)

Root Method #1 – CWM Root Method (Root + CWM recovery)

This root method is for the following Galaxy S5 models:
  • SM-G900T T-Mobile Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900P Sprint Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900R4 US Cellular Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900T1 Metro PCS Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900W8 Canadian Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900F International/European/Asian Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900M Middle East/South America Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900H International Exynos Galaxy S5
Step 1. Power off your Galaxy S5.   Then hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 3-5 seconds until you see a warning screen like shown below:
howto-root-galaxys5-1
Step 2. Hit Volume Up and you should see “Downloading…” screen like below.
howto-root-galaxys5-2
Step 3. Next connect a USB 2.0 micro-USB cable from your Galaxy S5 to your computer.
howto-root-galaxys5-3
Step 4. You will need to download the following three files, ODIN, Philz Touch CWM recovery, and SuperSU:
Once downloaded, unzip the Odin3v185.zip and you should get a folder with  executable EXE program.  DO NOT UNZIP other files, leave them in their zip file states.
howto-root-galaxys5-4 howto-root-galaxys5-5
Step 5. Double-click on the file “odin3 v1.85.exe” to start the ODIN program.  You should see a yellow-highlighted box with a random COM number.  If you do see this, you are good to go.  If you don’t see it, you need to install Samsung USB drivers.  Download and run the Samsung USB Driver program, reboot and repeat this Step.
howto-root-galaxys5-6
Step 6. Next, choose “PDA” button and find the Philz Touch CWM recovery file you downloaded earlier.
howto-root-galaxys5-7
Step 7. Click on “Start” and you should see Philz Touch CWM recovery being flashed to your Galaxy S5.
howto-root-galaxys5-8
Step 8. If you see “PASS!”, that means CWM recovery has been successfully flashed and your S5 should be rebooting now.
howto-root-galaxys5-9
Step 9. Once rebooted, copy over the SuperSU zip file to anywhere on your Galaxy S5 internal storage.
howto-root-galaxys5-10
Step 10. Power off your S5 again.  Then hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons together for around 3-5 seconds until you see “RECOVERY BOOTING” at the top-left of your screen.  If you see that, let go of all the buttons.
howto-root-galaxys5-11
Step 11.You should now be in Philz Touch CWM recovery.  Choose “Install Zip”.
howto-root-galaxys5-12
Step 12. Next, choose “Choose zip from /sdcard”.
howto-root-galaxys5-13
Step 13. Next choose the SuperSU zip file you copied over earlier.  This is the actual file that will root your Galaxy S5.
howto-root-galaxys5-14
Step 14. Once done, simply reboot your Galaxy S5.
howto-root-galaxys5-15
Step 15. Once rebooted, you should see a new app called “SuperSU”.  Tap on it to run.howto-root-galaxys5-16
Step 16. Choose “OK” when SuperSU asks you to disable KNOX.  KNOX is an idiotic Samsung security that you really don’t need and will interrupt your root like an annoying sister who wakes you up in the middle of the night.  Just disable it and get on with your life.  (We should really petition to get Samsung to completely remove KNOX.)
howto-root-galaxys5-17 howto-root-galaxys5-18
Step 17. Once KNOX has been zapped, your Galaxy S5 should be free and 100% rooted.  You can download and run any rooted app such as Titanium Backup app (which I highly recommend for backing up your apps as it will also backup your app data) and find the Superuser request window.  If you see this, congratulations!  You have fully rooted 100% Galaxy S5, go show off to your non-rooted friends with boring lives.
howto-root-galaxys5-19

Root Method #2 – CF Auto Root (Only Root, no CWM recovery)

This root method is for the following Galaxy S5 models:
  • SM-G900T T-Mobile Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900P Sprint Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900R4 US Cellular Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900T1 Metro PCS Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900W8 Canadian Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900F International/European/Asian Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900M Middle East/South America Galaxy S5
  • SM-G900H International Exynos
There’s another root method you can use to only give your Galaxy S5 “root”, not CWM recovery.  CWM Recovery is useful for backing up/installing new custom ROMs but if you don’t need those features (e.g. you will always be on stock firmware), you can use CF Auto Root, which is even simpler to do.
Step A. Power off your Galaxy S5.   Then hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 3-5 seconds until you see a warning screen like shown below:
howto-root-galaxys5-1
Step B. Hit Volume Up and you should see “Downloading…” screen like below.
howto-root-galaxys5-2
Step C. Next connect a USB 2.0 micro-USB cable from your Galaxy S5 to your computer.
howto-root-galaxys5-3
Step D. Go to this page on XDA and download the appropriate zip file for your model of Galaxy S5.
howto-root-galaxys5-chainfireautoroot-1
Step E. Unzip the zip file.
howto-root-galaxys5-chainfireautoroot-2
Step F. Double-click on “Odin3-v3.07.exe” file to run ODIN.howto-root-galaxys5-chainfireautoroot-3
Step G.  You should see a yellow-highlighted box with a random COM number.  If you do see this, you are good to go.  If you don’t see it, you need to install Samsung USB drivers.  Download and run the Samsung USB Driver program, reboot and repeat this Step.
howto-root-galaxys5-chainfireautoroot-4
Step H. Choose “PDA” and choose the file ending in “tar.md5″.
howto-root-galaxys5-chainfireautoroot-5
Step I. Hit “Start” button.
howto-root-galaxys5-chainfireautoroot-6
Step J. If you see “RESET!”, you have successfully rooted your Galaxy S5 using CF Auto Root and your S5 should be rebooting now.
howto-root-galaxys5-chainfireautoroot-7
Step K. Find SuperSU app and run the app.
howto-root-galaxys5-chainfireautoroot-8
Step L. Choose “OK” when SuperSU app asks you to disable KNOX.  No one like a useless security feature like KNOX, especially when you are rooting your Galaxy S5.
howto-root-galaxys5-chainfireautoroot-9

howto-root-galaxys5-chainfireautoroot-10
Step M. Once KNOX has been removed, your Galaxy S5 is 100% rooted!  Download and run a rooted app such as Titanium Backup app and you should see Superuser request window pop up like below.
howto-root-galaxys5-chainfireautoroot-11
If you rooted using CF Auto Root and you want to unroot, you can do it easily and within seconds by using SuperSU app.  Simply go to SuperSU app then choose “Full unroot” in Settings.  This will fully unroot your Galaxy S5 and allow you to take OTA if you are running stock firmware.  (This method will not work to unroot if you have rooted using CWM root method #1.)
howto-unroot-galaxys5
Q&A:
Q: Does this root method erase everything on my Galaxy S5?
A: No, it does not, both root methods on this page will root your Galaxy S5 and keep all of your data in-tact.
Q: Does this root method trip KNOX?
A: Yes, both root methods on this page trip KNOX, which is used by Samsung to void warranty.  However, if you have insurance, they should replace your phone regardless if something goes wrong and I highly recommend you have phone insurance if this is the first time rooting an Android device.
Q: I don’t get CWM Recovery, I just see stock recovery after flashing CWM with ODIN!!!
A: On some S5 models,  there is a script that overwrites the recovery you flashed. If you get stock recovery, just simply flash recovery again using method 1, as soon as you see “PASS!”, pull the battery before your phone reboots.
Put the battery back in and boot straight into CWM recovery, then when you reboot in CWM recovery, it will ask you to disable recovery script. Do that and you should be good to go.

Mahdi ROM for Galaxy S4! [Android 4.4.4/STABLE]

Based on latest Android 4.4.4, Mahdi ROM is a new custom AOSP ROM (What is AOSP?) on the market that brings ultimate performance tweaks along with many customizations. You will get a speedy ROM with a custom kernel that has tweaked governor for added performance/battery life.
I know some of you were having trouble with CM11 ROM last week and since CM11 ROMs are usually works in progress, you may see more bugs until they release stable releases.  Mahdi ROM releases are stable versions so you probably will get much less bugs if any.  Also, Sprint users were having trouble with CM11 last week, Mahdi ROM works flawless on my Sprint S4 as shown in video.
What I really like about Mahdi ROM is speed and performance out of the box without sacrificing battery life.  It’s definitely on on my priority list of go-to ROMs right now.  I first started using on my Nexus 5 and it was one of the fastest custom ROMs for it.  Luckily, Galaxy S4 is actually one of the phones Madhi ROM Team supports right now and you can get it if you have a Qualcomm-based S4 like AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, Canadian, and GT-i9505.
Mahdi ROM also has plenty of customization/features including PIE Controls, Screen recording, On-The-Go Mode, Immersive mode, Lockscreen notifications, Shake events (for both lockscreen and whole phone), floating Window, and more.
And yes, I get this question all the time but WiFi tethering works out of the box for all carriers on AOSP ROMs.  That’s a given for all AOSP ROMs so you should not worry about that.
Overall, I really, really, really dig Mahdi ROM.  A new custom ROM on the Galaxy S4 market right now and they are doing many things right, bringing users stable, fast custom ROM with great battery life/features.  So if you are in town for one of the fastest Android 4.4.4 ROMs, give this ROM a test drive over the week(end) and do let me know how much you like it!

Download:
Download Madhi ROM for Galaxy S4 (for all Qualcomm-based S4 like AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, Canadian, and GT-i9505)

To install, reboot into recovery, make backup ROM, wipe data/factory reset, install ROM, install Gapps, and reboot. (If for some reason you end up in a bootloop, reboot into recovery, go to Advanced Wipe for TWRP or Mounts & Storage for CWM, format/wipe /system, then re-install ROM.)

Note: If you have SafeStrap Recovery on AT&T or Verizon S4, DO NOT INSTALL THIS ROM, it will not work.
